ELICOS Course Entry Criteria

Prospective students must.

  • be 18 years' or older at course commencement.
  • for the Level 1 General English Starter course. little or no English is required.
  • for the Level 2 General English Elementary course. attain an IELTS score of 3.5 or demonstrated proficiency at CEFR Level A1, or equivalent.
  • for the Level 3 General English Pre-intermediate course, attain an IELTS score of 4.5 or demonstrated proficiency at CEFR Level A2, or equivalent.
  • for the Level 4 General English Intermediate course. attain an IELTS score of 5.0 or demonstrated proficiency at CEFR LEVEL B1, or equivalent.

ELICOS General English Target Students

The profile of the target student group is as follows :

  • Age group 18 and above
  • Nationality Students come from a range of overseas countnes
  • Aims Students are seeking to develop their English language skills so as to be able to communicate effectively in a range of situations.
  • Experience: The students may have little or no understanding of the Australian way of life or cultural expectations.

Student needs are addressed in a number of ways as follows :
Students commence at the level according to their, current ability. Where a student is having difficulty, they may be placed at a different level (where possible) or provided with additional support as per the Teaching and Assessment Policy and Associated Procedures.

The needs of students from different age groups and learning, capabilities are met by:

  • Adapting learning materials and activities to suit the cohort or specific students
  • Tailoring activities to specific levels and breaking the group into smaller groups
  • Allowing students who are more advanced to assist those at a lower level, for example, by pairing these students during activities

General English Course Outcomes

Our General English course is designed to help students build practical English skills for everyday communication in an English-speaking environment. The course covers real-life situations in Australia, enabling students to confidently navigate daily life and engage in conversations. The course is divided into four levels: Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, and Intermediate. Students will be placed at the appropriate level based on their language proficiency and can progress through multiple levels as needed.

The Beginner level is for students who are new to English. At this level, the focus is on learning survival English for everyday situations. By the end of the Beginner course, students will be able to:


  • Understand and use common everyday expressions.
  • Introduce themselves and others.
  • Ask and answer basic questions about personal details.
  • Communicate in simple situations with slow and clear speech, and ask for clarification when needed.

The Elementary level builds on basic communication skills and introduces more practical expressions. Students will learn to interact in routine situations and communicate about familiar topics. Upon completion of the Elementary level, students will be able to:


  • Understand and use sentences related to immediate personal and routine needs.
  • Engage in simple exchanges of information, such as shopping, family details, and local geography.
  • Participate in basic conversations with confidence.

The Pre-Intermediate level focuses on improving comprehension and writing skills for more complex daily situations. Students will be able to handle conversations and texts related to familiar topics in work, school, and leisure. By the end of the Pre-Intermediate course, students will be able to:


  • Understand the main points of clear, standard input on familiar subjects.
  • Write simple, connected text on topics like personal experiences and plans.
  • Express opinions, describe events, and give brief explanations for their thoughts and ideas.

The Intermediate level is for students who can already communicate effectively and want to expand their fluency. At this level, students will gain confidence in discussing complex topics and producing detailed writing. By the end of the Intermediate course, students will be able to:


  • Understand and analyze complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics.
  • Engage in conversations with fluency and spontaneity, making communication with native speakers easier.
  • Write detailed, clear texts on a variety of subjects and express well-structured viewpoints, including explaining pros and cons of different ideas.
